Background: Metastatic uterine low-grade smooth-muscle tumors may present with pulmonary symptoms and radiographic lung abnormalities consistent with metastatic neoplasms. Ovarian hormone stimulation of these smooth-muscle tumors has been suggested, but the role of surgical or medical oophorectomy has not been established in patients with metastatic disease.
Cases: Two women with histologically confirmed uterine low-grade smooth-muscle tumors metastatic to the lung had progressive and complete tumor regression after oophorectomy and no further therapy.
Conclusion: Some uterine low-grade smooth-muscle tumors metastatic to the lung regress after oophorectomy. Removing ovarian hormone stimulation may result in complete tumor regression without the need for further therapy.
