Better than perfect: a cause of overutilization

Laryngoscope. 1983 May;93(5):587-8. doi: 10.1002/lary.1983.93.5.587.

Abstract

There has been an overwhelming increase in scientific methods which has improved the practice of medicine. On the other hand, the costs have sky-rocketed to a point that we must ask ourselves, "Is this procedure sufficiently beneficial to warrant the expense?" Serious ethical and moral, as well as therapeutic, issues are involved.
