Diagnosis separate from psychotherapy: pros and cons

Am J Psychother. 1979 Apr;33(2):291-302. doi: 10.1176/appi.psychotherapy.1979.33.2.291.

Abstract

The gains and losses deriving from the separation of the diagnostic process from psychotherapy proper are discussed, especially as that applies to patients who are seen within an institutional setting. These gains and losses are viewed from the standpoint of the patient, the diagnosticians and the psychotherapists, and the institution itself.
