Excerpt

The simultaneous coexistence of food loss and waste and prevalence of hunger, undernourishment and malnutrition represents a failure of contemporary food systems. While the reduction in food loss and waste is a Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) target, this reduction can also help in the achievement of other SDGs, including achieving zero hunger and reduction in greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. This chapter documents scientific evidence on ways to reduce food loss and waste and provides recommendations for action at the global and national levels. Our recommendations encompass civil society actions, public and private investments and initiatives by citizens, corporations, governments, and international organizations. The chapter also highlights the gaps in action areas that require urgent attention from all stakeholders.
