Pheochromocytomas are tumors arising from chromaffin cells of the adrenal medulla. The clinical manifestations of these tumors are primarily related to the excessive secretion of catecholamines. Similar tumors that arise from extra-adrenal chromaffin cells have been referred to as paragangliomas. These tumors are predominantly benign but can be malignant in a minority of cases.
