Abstract

Epilepsy is a common disease state, occurring in approximately 1% of the population worldwide, including both pediatric and adult populations. It is characterized by recurrent episodes of unpredictable pathologic cortical brain activity. One-third of patients develop drug intractability and experience recurrent seizures, despite optimal treatment. These result in cognitive decline, behavioral changes, decreased quality of life, and increased risk for trauma and death (SUDEP- sudden unprovoked death from epilepsy). Therefore, the international league against epilepsy (ILAE) recommends referral of intractable patients to highly specialized epilepsy centers, for further evaluation for epilepsy surgery.
