A part of the residents of nursing homes drink alcohol. This regularly leads to moral questions and discussions. An explorative qualitative study has been done to gather insight into the experiences and views of residents and staff regarding alcohol consumption in nursing homes. Aim of this publication was to support care professionals in nursing homes to deal with moral challenges related to alcohol consumption. With interviews and a focus group with residents and staff, experiences, values and moral dilemmas were collected. While residents viewed alcohol consumption as a private matter, opinions of staff were not uniform. Staff is confronted with various moral questions based on different values, such as Respect for Autonomy, Quality of Life, Authenticity and (collective) Safety. This study advises staff to use the value scheme in case of concrete moral questions as a tool to careful analyse which values and norms are at stake and balance what could be an appropriate response.
In het verpleeghuis drinkt een deel van de bewoners alcohol. Regelmatig leidt dit tot vragen en discussies. Om inzicht te krijgen in hoe bewoners en zorgprofessionals aankijken tegen alcoholconsumptie in het verpleeghuis en met welke morele vragen zorgprofessionals te maken hebben, is explorerend kwalitatief onderzoek verricht. Het doel van dit artikel is om zorgprofessionals handvatten te bieden die hen kunnen ondersteunen bij het omgaan met morele kwesties rond alcoholconsumptie in de praktijk van het verpleeghuis. Met behulp van interviews en een focusgroep met bewoners en zorgprofessionals zijn ervaringen, waarden en morele dilemma’s geïnventariseerd. De geïnterviewde bewoners zijn van mening dat het aan bewoners zelf is om te beslissen of zij wel of niet alcohol consumeren. Zorgprofessionals hebben te maken met verschillende morele vraagstukken gerelateerd aan de waarden: Respect voor Autonomie, Kwaliteit van Leven, Authenticiteit en (collectieve) Veiligheid. Het waardenschema dat op basis hiervan is ontwikkeld, kan de zorgpraktijk bij de analyse van concrete morele vraagstukken ondersteunen om zorgvuldig af te wegen wat gepast beleid kan zijn.
