Knowledge and attitude towards infant feeding among rural health personnel

Indian Pediatr. 1987 Oct;24(10):917-20.

Abstract

PIP: The knowledge and attitude towards infant feeding practices were studied among such health personnel as doctors, nurses, and dais who provided maternal and child health services in rural areas. The health personnel were not fully aware of the proper infant feeding practices. Almost 17.5% of these respondents advised that breastfeeding should be stopped by 1 year of age and 75.1% advised the use of diluted milk as supplementary feeding. These inappropriate suggestions to an illiterate rural population could be disastrous. The study highlights the needs for continuing medical education and for the stepping-up of pediatric training in undergraduate coursework in this area.
