A study of acute myocardial infarction morbidity and mortality in Kaunas, using a WHO-recommended method, demonstrated that total mortality rate dropped from 43.9 to 31.7% between 1972 and 1986. An increase in morbidity was recorded among young men, which was due to increasing number of patients with the first myocardial infarction. Mortality changes follow an undulating pattern.
