Cognitive Biases & Errors in Headache Medicine

Headache. 2019 Nov;59(10):1863-1870. doi: 10.1111/head.13686. Epub 2019 Nov 4.

Abstract

Premise: In recent years, the importance and prevalence of cognitive biases has gained scholarly attention in medicine as well as management science regarding a wide range of human activities.

Problem: The purpose of this review is to illustrate some of the many areas of Headache Medicine that exemplify some of these areas and to highlight the fact that our discipline is, in some cases, apparently more prone to some of these biases than other areas of clinical medicine.

Potential solution: The lack of prospective studies to identify and address unconscious cognitive processes that skew the process of clinical headache management indicates that this is a field of investigation that is ripe for attention.

Keywords: cognitive biases; cognitive errors; heuristics.
