[Safety in shipping: the role of the human factor]

Abstract

Objectives: The main aim of this paper is to examine the role of human factors in the safety of ship transport (shipping).

Methods: Particularly, we analyzed the personal, psychosocial and organizational factor that intervene in this context and the consequences on the safety performance and workers' well-being.

Results: In this review, some shipping accidents and their causes are presented and a particular attention will be paid to human error, fatigue and stress, non-technical skills and perception of safety.

Conclusions: In the final part of the paper the safety performance and its antecedents in the context of shipping will be extensively examined.

L’obiettivo del presente lavoro è fare una rassegna sul fattore umano nella sicurezza dei trasporti marittimi (shipping). Verranno, quindi, analizzati i fattori personali, psicosociali e organizzativi, che intervengono in tale processo e le ricadute sulla safety performance e sul benessere del lavoratore. In questa rassegna, nella quale saranno presentati anche alcuni incidenti navali e loro cause, particolare attenzione verrà prestata all’errore umano, alla fatica ed allo stress, alle non-technical skills, ed alla percezione della Sicurezza. La parte finale racchiude un approfondimento relativo alla safety performance inerente lo shipping.
