Perceived Hardness through Actual and Virtual Damped Natural Vibrations

IEEE Trans Haptics. 2018 Oct-Dec;11(4):646-651. doi: 10.1109/TOH.2018.2841820. Epub 2018 May 29.

Abstract

Humans perceive hardness of objects from damped natural vibrations by tapping their surfaces. We investigated the roles of six parameters characterizing the vibration in virtual and real environments. The effects of some parameters differed between the two environments. This finding provides valuable information to the developers of haptic applications.
