Abstract

The long storage time of charged particles in a well-controlled environment by ion traps provides ideal conditions for precision spectroscopy. After an introduction to the properties of traps we present examples in mass spectroscopy, and measurements of microwave and optical transition frequencies. The application to novel frequency standards will be discussed and we sketch briefly some fundamental aspects of light-atom interactions.
