The role of prophylactic antibiotics in the prevention of prosthetic device infections

Abstract

This article examines available information concerning the use of antimicrobial agents to prevent prosthetic device infection at the time of surgical implantation. Additionally, the authors comment on the dearth of information concerning prophylactic antibiotics prior to elective surgical or dental procedures to prevent contamination of prosthetic devices already in place.
