Abstract

Optogenetics, the use of channelrhodopsin: genetically-encodable light-activated proteins, allows the manipulation of specific neural circuit elements with millisecond precision. It has been 10 years since the discovery of channelrhodopsin, and optogenetics is now widely accepted as a powerful tool for addressing causal relationships between neural activity and behavior.
