Transcription factor-induced pluripotency is extremely inefficient and assumed to be stochastic. In a recent Nature publication, Rais et al. show that depletion of the methyl-binding protein 3 yields reprogramming efficiencies of up to 100% within days, suggesting that elimination of a single gene suffices to render reprogramming a deterministic process.
