Pilot randomized trials: is there a need?

J Bone Joint Surg Am. 2012 Jul 18:94 Suppl 1:15-8. doi: 10.2106/JBJS.L.00180.

Abstract

A pilot randomized study is often essential to ensure the feasibility of conducting a large, randomized study. Pilot studies help to define the sample size, establish measurable outcomes, promote methodological rigor, establish the ability to recruit participants, assess the risk-benefit ratio of the treatments, and evaluate the economic viability of a definitive study.
