Differentiation of ataxic and orthopedic gait abnormalities in the horse

Vet Clin North Am Equine Pract. 2011 Dec;27(3):411-6. doi: 10.1016/j.cveq.2011.08.007. Epub 2011 Oct 21.

Abstract

The differentiation of ataxia and orthopedic disease can be facilitated by the use of several additional tests, not commonly part of either neurologic or orthopedic examination protocols. However, a full neurologic and orthopedic examination and suitable diagnostic imaging will of course also be necessary in such cases. The common association of orthopedic and neurologic disease makes it even more necessary to correctly attribute movement or posture abnormalities to potentially treatable structures.
