Abstract

Allograft corneal transplantation is currently the most effective and optimum method to treat corneal disease, however it is the immune rejection that the main reason for graft edema caused by vascularization and inflammation of the cornea and surgical failure after transplantation. Corneal endothelial cells occupy a crucial position as immune privilege and the primary barriers for maintaining normal physiological function of eye. In this paper, the various stages (recognition, response and reaction of immune system) of corneal endothelial changes in the morphological and biological characteristics had been presented after allograft corneal transplantation.
