Team huddles: the role of the primary care educator

Clin Teach. 2010 Sep;7(3):157-60. doi: 10.1111/j.1743-498X.2010.00369.x.

Abstract

Background: The Institute for Healthcare Improvement (USA) has recommended the 'team huddle' as one communication strategy to improve health care outcomes.

Context: Although there is no literature on the extent of the practice within primary care fields, or the outcomes associated with it, anecdotal reports from innovative family medicine practices in the USA suggest that the team huddle has the potential to increase office efficiency, communication and staff satisfaction.

Innovation and implications: We review considerations in applying the team huddle to practice, and provide recommendations for ambulatory health care educators to teach this technique to trainees.
