Abstract

Between january 1981 to may 1988, we performed 2,478 flexible esophagogastro-duodenoscopies in adult patients; in 90 patients we suspected esophageal carcinoma. Only in 79 we corroborated the diagnosis in clinical, radiological, endoscopical and histopathological basis. Male were commonest than female (3.5:1). The clinical picture included dysphagia and weight loss. Endoscopically, location was commonest in medium esophagus, with infiltrative type and histo-pathologically squamos cell carcinoma. The endoscopy showed a sensibility of 92% and specificity of 84% in esophageal cancer diagnosis.
