Evaluation guideline for managing chronic pain

Perspectives. 2009 Winter;33(4):15-7.

Abstract

The purpose of this paper was to present the findings of an evaluation of the effectiveness of a pain guideline. A review of the literature was completed and relevant background information provided. Evaluation methods were identified and results presented. Following identification of limitations, recommendations to improve the guidelines and tools were made as well as the need for continuing staff education and ongoing monitoring of residents' pain. In summary, despite inconsistent use of the guideline and tools and, contrary to the literature reviewed, few residents were shown to experience persistent, chronic pain.
