Drug-induced xerostomia

J Can Dent Assoc. 1991 May;57(5):391-3.

Abstract

Drug induced xerostomia is not uncommon particularly among the aging. This condition can have a rapid devastating effect on the oral environment of these individuals who may already be struggling with other serious health problems. Early detection by taking an accurate drug history allows the dentist and hygienist to develop a personalized preventive treatment plan, including frequent recalls. Physicians should be consulted as early as possible and be encouraged to refer patients on xerostomic medications to the dental office for preventive care.
