Distortion of ultrashort pulses on total internal reflection

Opt Lett. 1985 May 1;10(5):218-9. doi: 10.1364/ol.10.000218.

Abstract

Significant shape distortion has been observed when an ultrashort pulse is totally internally reflected from an interface. This shape distortion arises from the discontinuity in the Fresnel equations for total internal reflection at zero frequency. The distortion becomes significant when the incoming-pulse duration approaches a single cycle of its carrier frequency.
