The fundamental goal in the treatment of osteoporosis is to prevent fractures. In recent years there has been intensive research on pharmaceutical agents that can be used to treat osteoporosis. This article presents the general principles for treating osteoporosis, developed on the basis of the available literature. Those drugs which have been approved for prescription in Poland are discussed in particular detail.
