Childhood obesity: assessing the cost

Abstract

This paper addresses the cost of childhood and adolescent obesity on the United States healthcare system. The specific focus is the prevention and treatment of obesity in children. The cost of prevention and treatment programs are considered as well as other costs due to further complications caused by obesity in children and adolescents. Examples of health expenditures in Canada are used to exemplify the prevalence of obesity and its effect on healthcare expenditures.
