[Epidemiological characteristics of hepatitis A in Gdansk Providence in years 1991-1993]

Abstract

Aim: Epidemiological analysis of hepatitis A morbidity increase observed in years 1991-1993, in Gdańsk province.

Material and methods: Retrospective analysis concerned medical documentation of 3040 hepatitis A cases from Gdańsk Province.

Results: No significant sex distribution differences among the hepatitis A cases were observed, incidence among men and villagers was essentially higher. The hepatitis A incidence increase observed in Gdańsk Province was multifocal and seasonal. In 1926 (63.4%) cases the probable route of infection was ascertained. The most often potential source of infection was an ill member of the close family. Analysis of employment pointed at the majority of the morbidity among people with a low level of education. The most numerous group consisted of patients in age 11-20 yrs. There were no significant differences in comparison of age groups according to the place of living (towns vs villages).
