A survey is provided on the physical and chemical bases of luminescence and its applications in analytical chemistry. Practical uses of fluorescence and phosphorescence, these highly sensitive analytical methods are assessed. Luminescence-based analysis methods are summarised on the parent compounds and their analytical derivatives focussing on morphine and related compounds, including metabolites. Hyphenated techniques, analyses of chemical and biological samples are also discussed.
