The fight for reproductive rights in Central and Eastern Europe. Slovakia: time for new targets

Plan Parent Chall. 1995:(2):24.

Abstract

PIP: There needs to be greater political involvement in formulating a population policy and supporting family planning programs in Slovakia. Publicity about family planning education and services is the aim of the Slovak Association of Family Planning and Parenthood Education. In Slovakia 3.9% of women use hormonal methods, and 9.4% use the IUD. The country is experiencing slow economic and social growth. Slovakian women support a strong family with children. However women (especially teenagers, women with large families, and poor or unemployed women) also struggle with problems related to unwanted pregnancies. The country is experiencing social change, and families must cope with high inflation, inadequate housing, unemployment, and the breakdown of previously available social services. Personal responsibility is now stressed, and the government welfare policy is weakening. Living conditions have deteriorated, and the absolute number of poor families is increasing. There is an increase in the number of wealthy families, with life styles which result in the lack of time for children. Family planning becomes very important under these circumstances.
