[Article in French]

Abstract

PIP: The prospects for the French national retirement pension scheme are reviewed in light of current demographic trends. The authors note that the present scheme can only remain viable if the population continues to grow. Since this scenario is unlikely, the various alternatives that would keep the system financially solvent are reviewed. The authors conclude that a postponement of the legal age for retirement is preferable to a reduction in benefits or the development of a pay-as-you-go system. (SUMMARY IN ENG)
