Abstract

PIP: Use of the proper policies and appropriate methods has enabled the Chinese government to control population growth in that country. The growth rate of the Chinese population dropped from 23.2% in 1957 to 11.54% in 1983. The government attained this positive result by working from the theory that population growth and economic growth are closely related. Family planning policies, therefore, had to be adapted to each unique local situation. The Chinese government realized that the cooperation of the people was essential, so great effort was put forth to educate them and help them understand the advantages of population control. Tangible examples were used to illustrate this rather than theory, and people were organized in such a way that they would all be informed. In addition, laws were established to encourage people to get married at the proper age and not to have too many children. Medical services were also improved, so good contraceptives, services, and research were made available.
