NHS costs. Age-old myths

Health Serv J. 1998 Aug 27;108(5619):24-5.

Abstract

The ageing of the UK population will not automatically lead to increased demands on the NHS. If people live longer they stay healthy longer. The cost of caring for them is shifted, not increased. It has not been proven that an ageing population and the costs of medical technology justify the NHS receiving above-inflation funding increases year after year.
