Physicians should encourage epileptic patients to participate in sporting activities to enhance their physical fitness, self-esteem and social integration. Since about 5% of the population with epilepsy run the risk of suffering seizures induced by exercise, advice on such activity should be given individually. The physician should have good insight into the patient's medical history and should be interested in, and know about the different kinds of sport. The risk of injuries connected to seizure must be weighed against the physical, psychological and social problems which may result from exclusion from sports.
