Fatal fulminant postoperative pulmonary edema: an unusual cause of second-trimester maternal mortality

Diagn Gynecol Obstet. 1980 Fall;2(3):209-12.

Abstract

A case of fatal luminant, postanesthetic pulmonary edema is presented. The relationships of pregnancy, febrile illness, hemorrhage, exploratory laparotomy, and fulminant postoperative pulmonary edema are discussed. The pathophysiology of the mechanisms of postanesthetic pulmonary edema are reviewed. A series of 40 similar cases are presented and contrasted with this case.
