Semin Vasc Surg. 2022 Dec;35(4):397-403. doi: 10.1053/j.semvascsurg.2022.10.006. Epub 2022 Nov 4.

Abstract

There are many resources available for retrospective analyses in vascular surgery research. Methods used commonly when conducting clinical research include data gathering, literature review, database integration, and statistical analysis. In this review, the databases used commonly in vascular surgery are discussed, including the following institutional data sets: Vascular Quality Initiative, American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program, National Inpatient Sample, and Nationwide Readmissions Database. Each type has advantages and limitations. Retrospective clinical research can help answer questions and advance knowledge in vascular surgery. Clinical research begins by having a clear question and knowing the best data source and methods, as well as presenting the findings well at the podium and in the manuscript to optimize dispersion and chances for success.
