Ann Med Surg (Lond). 2022 May 18:78:103803. doi: 10.1016/j.amsu.2022.103803. eCollection 2022 Jun.

Abstract

Introduction and importance: Carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA 19-9) can be increased in benign ovarian cysts, but extreme elevation is rare.

Case presentation: We present a case of a mature cystic teratoma with extremely elevated CA 19-9 levels. After ovarian cystectomy, the level of CA 19-9 was decreased.

Clinical discussion: Abnormal levels of CA 19-9 can lead to unnecessary medical interventions and patient anxiety.

Conclusion: CA 19-9 can be extremely increased in mature cystic teratoma without any complications.

Keywords: CA 19–9; Teratoma; Tumor marker.
