Excerpt

In a normal pregnancy, the placenta anchors to decidualized endometrium. The abnormal invasion of placental trophoblasts into the uterine myometrium is called placenta accreta. Based on the degree of myometrial invasion, it is considered a spectrum of disorders, encompassing placenta accreta, placenta increta, and placenta percreta. Placenta accreta spectrum (PAS) disorders are associated with increased maternal morbidity and mortality. Therefore, these patients should be cared for by an interprofessional team. The International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) proposed a nomenclature grading system under the umbrella diagnosis of PAS that replaced the old categorical terminology (placenta accreta, increta, and percreta).
