Extraskeletal chondroma walling the temporomandibular joint: Report of a rare case and review of the literature

Int J Surg Case Rep. 2018:49:67-69. doi: 10.1016/j.ijscr.2018.06.012. Epub 2018 Jun 23.

Abstract

Introduction: Extraskeletal or soft-tissue chondroma is a rare benign cartilaginous neoplasm which usually affects hands and feet. Scientific literature only reports one previous case of this pathology in the preauricular region.

Presentation of the case: This report describes a rare case of extraskeletal chondroma surrounding the temporomandibular joint of a 55-year-old female patient.

Discussion and conclusion: Diagnosis of extraskeletal chondroma is challenging since tissue swelling, diagnostic imaging and even histopathological features may be misleading for other joint or gland pathologies.
