Carbohydrate nutrition: managing energy intake and partitioning through lactation

Vet Clin North Am Food Anim Pract. 2014 Nov;30(3):577-97. doi: 10.1016/j.cvfa.2014.07.004. Epub 2014 Oct 21.

Abstract

The objective of this article is to discuss the effects of dietary carbohydrates on energy intake and partitioning as cows progress through lactation. Understanding how diet interacts with the physiologic state as it changes through lactation is critical to maximize productivity, efficiency of production, and health of lactating dairy cows.

Keywords: Energy balance; Energy intake; Energy partitioning; Feeding behavior; Fiber digestibility; Grouping cows; Maintenance group; Ruminal starch fermentability.
