Management of hyperlipidemia in pediatrics

Curr Opin Cardiol. 2012 Mar;27(2):92-7. doi: 10.1097/HCO.0b013e32834fea6c.

Abstract

Purpose of review: The purpose of this review is to provide up-to-date information on diagnosis and management of hyperlipidemia in children and adolescents.

Recent findings: Recent research reemphasizes the importance of dyslipidemia as a risk factor for cardiovascular disease and supports a universal approach to screening for genetic dyslipidemias.

Summary: The approach to management of hyperlipidemia should take two forms. First, a population-based approach to improve lifestyle and lipid levels in all children. Second, a high-risk strategy to identify children with genetic and environmental dyslipidemias through screening and appropriately treat those children and adolescents with dyslipidemia.
