This chapter covers the incidence, prevalence, and magnitude of intentional (violent) and unintentional mortality resulting from injuries at the global and continental (African) levels. The injury profiles of South Africa and Uganda are examined to demonstrate the merits of establishing a country-level injury surveillance system. The chapter also includes an overview of the risk factors and determinants that are associated with intentional and unintentional injuries resulting in mortality in Africa. In conclusion, generic recommendations are listed for the control, prevention, and elimination of injuries and violence in Africa, with a view to encouraging injury control and safety promotion practice and policy.
