Abstract

Urinary incontinence is an unresolved problem for many women. Some non pharmacological treatments care effectively contribute to its solution.

Materials and methods: Twenty one women, of whom fourteen were affected by stress incontinence and 7 by urge incontinence, were trained to perform specific exercises at home, for one month and exposed to 8 electrical stimulations of 20 minutes each. Women were asked to fill a diary reporting the number of incontinence episodes, the volume of urine losses, and the description of the event.

Results: Eight women did not report any benefit; 5 referred a 50% reduction of the loss, and 8 the complete resolution of symptoms. Benefits were mainly reported in women with stress incontinence (10/14) 1 woman with urge incontinence did non report any benefit.

Conclusions: While these results confirm the effectiveness of this intervention in women with urinary incontinence, as already suggested in other studies, they also point to the need of larger patient population to identify the best clinical setting and the final impact on symptoms.
