Abstract

Despite the possibilities of liver transplantation, liver failure is still associated with a high mortality rate. Liver replacement therapies have been developed to bridge the acute decompensation of liver function. A variety of artificial and bioartificial devices as well as hepatocyte transplantation are already tested in clinical settings. To date, few controlled data are available, especially with regard to patient survival. Therefore, liver replacement therapy should only be used in clinical studies at specialized centers.
