Labour Code, 1988

Annu Rev Popul Law. 1988:15:95, 482-4.

Abstract

PIP: This document contains provisions of the 1988 Labor Code of Bulgaria relating to maternity leave for pregnancy, birth, and adoption (120 days for the first child, 150 days for the second child, 180 days for the third child, and 120 days for the fourth and every subsequent child) and paid leave for raising a young child (until the first, second, or third child completes two years of age and for six months for subsequent children). If the family has twins who constitute the second and third child, the leave will extend until the twins complete three years of age. A female employee may choose to extend unpaid leave until the child completes three years of age. In each case, the mother may opt to have the leave applied to the child's father or grandparents instead of to herself. Female employees who place their babies in child care are entitled to a paid leave of one hour twice daily or two hours once a day for breast feeding until the child completes the age of eight months. This time will be increased in the case of twins or prematurely-born children. A similar amount of time will be granted to adopting mothers or stepmothers.
